Putting the Work in Alone

Putting the Work in Alone

Going to a lacrosse trainer or shooting coach is certainly a good thing. They can help with the mechanics of your shooting motion or come up with helpful, game-like drills to elevate your shooting and dodging.

They can help you with your footwork and ideas on your approaches. That’s what we do at FCL!

But at a certain point, your lacrosse development is on you. If you ask any player at the highest level, they often go alone with a bucket of balls and find a cage or hit the wall to get better. Players need to learn to self correct and self adjust. Players need to learn to “feel” the game, which often can’t even be done on your own outside of the context of a small sided game or game period!

While you can incorporate drills and focus on technique when you shoot, it's also a good time to try new things and make some adjustments that feel natural or add some flare to their game. Visualize things that could happen in a game or imitate players that you look up to. It's how guys like the Thompson's and the Kavanagh's developed their natural flare, joy, and skill for the game. We help our FCL Athletes in our Athlete Program think of ideas and things to be working on, but there needs to be a collaboration.

Bottom line - lacrosse trainers are very beneficial and good teachers that you should listen to. They can give great tips and drills to help you improve. But at the highest level of lacrosse, the most successful players are the ones that put it on themselves to find a cage or wall to put in the work. Sometimes listening to too many voices can often have you in a state of questioning and confusion. There is a diminishing return, in our opinion. And often times, there is no shooting or wall ball routine that's a one-size-fits-all. You need to figure out what you need to work on and what works for you to help improve and love the process. Think for yourself, and collaborate with the people in the game you really trust.

We hope you found this helpful. We started First Class Lacrosse because we believe in the power player development. We believe you can get exponentially better if you combine a great work ethic with the guidance of knowing what to work on and how to do it. Luckily, we experienced it firsthand as players and coaches. Our goal is to pass on what we have learned and experienced to future generations of lacrosse players, parents, and coaches.
